Applications for 2018 are now being accepted by the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund. The application process must be completed through the on-line portal found on the Fund’s website: www.jrhmsf.org (the “Key” for the JRHMSF applications is JRHMSF)

There are two types of scholarship applications available: Academic and Training/Vocational. The details and eligibility requirements for each scholarship are available on the Fund’s website, www.jrhmsf.org

In 2017, the Fund awarded $1.4 million in scholarship awards to students in the U.S. and Canada. Assisting the sons, daughters and financial dependents of Teamster members with their educational goals is a tradition that we are proud to continue.

About James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund

James R. Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years, and, in recognition of his tireless service to the union and its members, was honored as General President Emeritus for life. At the November 1999 General Executive Board meeting, then-General Secretary-Treasurer C. Thomas Keegel presented a resolution to establish the new scholarship fund. This site describes the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund (JRHMSF) and outlines eligibility requirements and application procedures.

The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund is an independent organization established and registered as a tax-exempt entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Fund is established solely to provide scholarships to the child or dependent of a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and contributions to the Fund are deductible as charitable contributions to the extent permitted by law. In 2016 the Fund awarded $1,200,000 in scholarships.

Teamsters Local 769 Annual Toy Drive

Posted December 6, 2017 By Local 769

‘Tis the Season once again for our Annual Teamsters Local 769 Toy Drive. Our Union will be collecting toys for children in need and distributing those collected through programs in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and Monroe Counties. The following flyer can be posted on Local 769 approved job site bulletin boards and distributed to all members.

With toys being split to multiple areas, please encourage all of your brothers and sisters to give toys for the less fortunate. Help us make this year’s Toy Drive the biggest ever. All toys should be dropped off at the Miami hall between now and the deadline or they can be brought to the December 21st General Membership Meeting. The deadline for drop off is December 21st, 2017.

Let’s really do it for the kids this year and show how Teamsters help to raise the bar, making things better in their communities as well as their jobs.

Call To Action – STOP HB 25

Posted December 4, 2017 By Local 769

Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 5th, state representatives on the Government Accountability Committee will vote on HB 25, the union busting bill that would eliminate Florida public unions in a workplace if an arbitrary number of workers, set by the politicians, do not voluntarily pay dues.

This is the same legislation that workers packed committee meetings against last session to voice their strong opposition. Now House leaders are trying to ram through this damaging bill AGAIN, with little to no public input.

Too many families across Florida are already living paycheck to paycheck, yet Tallahassee politicians want to try to dismantle their union and make things worse for all of us. Legislation requiring the payment of union dues by over fifty-percent of a bargaining unit or the forced decertification of that union is unfair, unnecessary, and a waste of taxpayer dollars. It’s unlawful to force anyone to join a union, and Florida already has the processes in place for workers to remove a negotiating body from their workplace.

Make no mistake, this bill is just an attempt by billionaire CEO backed politicians to make it harder for nurses, teachers, bus drivers and other public servants to come together to advocate for their on the job needs and negotiate to protect their paychecks.

Call (855) 235-2469 to be connected with a state representative on the Government Accountability Committee. Leave them with the message that you reject this clear assault on workers’ rights and urge them to vote NO on HB 25.

70,000 Pounds More Relief on its Way to Puerto Rico

Posted October 18, 2017 By Local 769

Over the weekend, Teamsters Local 769 and Teamsters Hispanic Caucus Florida Chapter, along with local Union members and residents of Pembroke Pines, worked together to collect hurricane relief supplies for Teamsters Local Union No. 901 and the community in Puerto Rico. A “Great Big Thank You” to all who donated, helped to sort items, labeled items and helped to load the donated items into the shipping container.

This event in Pembroke Pines was held on Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th at Flamingo Park on the corner of Sheridan and Flamingo.  During this two day event, a multitude of folks stopped by to drop off their donations.  Some folks stayed to volunteer and some stayed to chat with Commissioner Jay Schwartz who was in attendance along with his wife. They not only donated items for relief but also volunteered both days to help sort and load donations that were being delivered.

On behalf of all of the organizers of this event, we would like to thank everyone who donated and volunteered as well as the following groups for their efforts above and beyond; Ultimate Software, Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School and Renaissance Charter School at Pines for their donations. This event would not have been possible without the partnership with Crowley Liner & Logistics.  Again, a big thank you to all.

The donations of 70,000 pounds collected over the weekend is in transit for final destination to Puerto Rico.

If anyone has any questions regarding future donations, please contact Business Agent and Human Rights Commission Representative David Renshaw at (305) 642 6255 ext 2236.

A Day of Golf for Teamster Children

Posted October 9, 2017 By Local 769

After all of the storms of late and a number of recent rainy days, the weather held for our Annual 2017 Teamsters Local 769 Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. On Saturday October 7, 2017, friends of Teamsters Local 769 came from all over South Florida to the Palm Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach Florida. Each year Local 769 organizes the event to raise money for our scholarship fund which benefits the children of our members who are high school seniors entering college.

Teamsters work hard to provide for their children and helping them in some way to provide a good education is the least we can do to provide a strong foundation to the next generation. Making sure Teamster children grow up receiving a good education is a goal of every Teamster and the that is the very reason the Teamsters Local 769 Scholarship Fund is there to help.

Teamsters Local 769 would like to thank every sponsor and those who attended this year’s Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. We hope to see you again next year for what is always a fun day. In the meantime, spread the word about the Scholarship Fund to all of your coworkers with children entering college. It’s just another way that Teamsters Local 769 members stand up for their brothers and sisters and their families.
