While America’s Union movement works to improve conditions for all working families, we must also work to help those left behind in our worsening economy.

The United Way is a long time partner of Teamsters Local 769 and for years this partnership has truly made a difference right here in our own communities. The United Way supports many programs right here is South Florida, some of which directly benefit our fellow union brothers and sisters.

As union members, we know that if one of our own falls on hard times that our union brothers and sisters will rally together to help, but unfortunately that is not always enough. The United Way administers a Union Fund for just that occasion. It offers housing, utility and food assistance with no administrative fees. 100% of the donations made to the fund go to help members in need. “While every situation is unique,” says Chrissy Cassata the Palm Beach County AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison, “they’ve all found themselves at a place they never thought they’d be. They come to me physically and emotionally deflated with stories of heartbreak and despair.” Chrissy continues, “The sad fact is there is little public assistance available and on average it takes just more than $2,000 to help a family get back on their feet.”

Many brothers and sisters of Teamsters Local 769 have already had the opportunity to contribute to the 2015 United Way Campaign through their employer such as the employees of UPS, but they aren’t they only ones. “Not only do other union employers contribute to United Way–but so do the Officers and staff at the Local.”, said Teamsters Local 769 Secretary-Treasurer Josh Zivalich.

Every year, the United Way of Miami-Dade holds a Labor LIVES UNITED event to commemorate the partnership of organized labor and United Way. This past June 26th, the Fifth Annual Labor Lives United Golf Tournament, which was co-chaired by Teamsters Local 769 Secretary-Treasurer Josh Zivalich, teed off at the Doral in Miami. Guests enjoyed a fun day out on the course with food, drinks and prizes, all benefiting United Way of Miami-Dade.

Teamsters Local 769 proudly endorse the 2015 United Way campaign and urge you to look for your opportunity to support this important effort as well. Together we can make real investments in our community, our country and our future.
